Before heading to a cafe with my sketchbook and drawing supplies, I have a fun pre-visit ritual. The night before, I indulge in a visual journey, scrolling through platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, or the free image haven that is Unsplash. I carefully select an image that captivates me, allowing me to pre-draw it in preparation for my cafe session. This thoughtful routine ensures that I avoid getting lost in an endless scroll during my actual drawing time, making my cafe experience not only more efficient but also deeply enjoyable. I can't help but wonder if other artists share this particular quirk in their creative process.
More often than not, I intentionally refrain from revisiting the initial inspiration image when I'm immersed in drawing at the cafe. By doing so, I ensure that my creative process has some sort of imagination, this allows me to infuse my own unique artistic flair into the creation. This intentional deviation from the original source material not only fosters authenticity but also results in a piece that is distinctly my own, a harmonious blend of inspiration and personal expression.
Embracing this approach not only nurtures my artistic freedom but also serves as a powerful antidote to my perfectionist tendencies. The beauty lies in the detachment from an exact replica of the initial image; the end result is meant to be a unique interpretation, free from the constraints of an idealized vision. If you ever catch me expressing dissatisfaction with a piece, it's likely because I had a specific outcome in mind, but I've learned to gracefully let go and move on to new inspirations. On occasions when I temporarily step away from a piece, it's not a farewell but a pause for reflection. I return to those creations with a refreshed perspective, whether it's weeks, months, or even years later, allowing my art to evolve organically.
I've been a loyal patron of Greenpoint's Greta's Coffee and Kitchen ever since they first opened their doors. This charming cafe offers an array of Mediterranean-inspired dishes and serves up truly delightful coffee. Their avocado toast is an absolute standout, undoubtedly the best I've ever had.
Decor
The decor exudes minimalistic elegance, highlighted by the stunningly beautiful tiles that adorn the space. Impeccable cleanliness is a hallmark of this establishment, creating an inviting atmosphere. Additionally, their outside seating area is both comfortable and heated, featuring clear doors that effectively shield against the chilly weather while maintaining a welcoming ambiance.
Atmosphere
While Greta's Coffee and Kitchen is typically bustling with activity, I relish those serene moments when the ambiance is more tranquil. During these quieter times, I find joy in stopping by to indulge in some peaceful reading, engage in creative writing, or immerse myself in the pages of my sketchbook.
