| Daydreaming about visiting Italy. If I ever go I will call it my birthright trip! |
I love to visit different cafes or coffee shops, but I have my favorites that I love to return to. A lot of my sketchbook drawings were either started or finished at Cafe Grumpy. I find it interesting when patrons sit at a cafe to draw other patrons, but I feel too shy to do it myself. I did it once and was pretty fearful that they were going to look up and catch me. I think they conveniently looked up much after I was looking down at my sketchbook. I feel lucky!
When I think about making art at a cafe I sometimes think of Laren Stover's book, The Bohemian Manifesto. It was magical and eccentric, as well as kind when funny. It was illustrated by the artist IZAK Zenou. His art always makes me smile. Do you remember the fashion illustrations in newspapers in the 80's and 90's? His work looks like that, but instead of sharp and fierce, his work is beautifully colorful and adorable.
I sometimes wonder why I don't use more color in my art and stick to black ink. I think it is because of convenience. I don't have a car and live in NYC. Carrying a lot of art supplies with me is a literal backache. I do use color in my larger pieces. If you want to take a look, I have my Linktree listed on the homepage of my blog.

I have been going to all of the Cafe Grumpy locations for years. I have even won a mug, tote bag, a bag of coffee, and a free drink for going to all of their locations within a month. I find this very amusing. Starbucks would never do that! I miss Grumpy's Chelsea location, RIP!

Nestled in the quiet section of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a Cafe Grumpy location that boasts an expansive and inviting space. The back room, adorned with numerous wooden tables and chairs, exudes a cozy charm that complements its comfort. Adding to the allure is a free library, a bookshelf where patrons can take a book or leave a book. They have a clean customer bathroom too!

At the forefront, a generously sized window bathes the area in natural light, creating a haven for vibrant and flourishing plants. Complementing the ambiance is the convenience of free WiFi, enhancing the overall experience.
During quieter moments, when the cafe is graced by just a few patrons, the genuine warmth of the baristas becomes particularly apparent. Engaging in conversation with them is not just a transaction but a pleasurable exchange. The baristas have great taste in music which further enhances the welcoming atmosphere.
I appreciate the pastry offerings, extending beyond the expected croissants and muffins. A personal favorite is the citrus olive oil bundt cake, a treat that never fails to satisfy. The menu also showcases seasonal drinks, such as the enchanting rose lattes and the indulgent spicy hot chocolate, adding an element of variety to each visit.
